Gaia (Science part) - DRH007

Gaia, Mother Earth. In this episode we go through the science of this topic and we start revisiting the concepts and theories established by James Lovelock. (Rafael also had a mild cold… not that you needed to know this anyway...)

The main idea is that the biosphere of the earth behaves like a living organism and always tries to maintain a state of homoeostasis, which means trying to stay In balance similar to a giant cell.

Lovelock also stated that Earth's atmosphere is different because it has life on it, and mostly is thanks to the process of photosynthesis.

Gaia - DRH006

Down the Rabbit Hole episode 6 has a special guest from far away, Anna, co-host in another Dark Mind's radio podcast, Synapse. Joins us to talk about a very interesting and ancient topic: Gaia.

And we start with understanding where this word and concept came from. The Gaia (pronounced GAY-ah) hypothesis is the idea that Earth is a living organism and can regulate its own environment. This idea argues that Earth is able to maintain conditions that are favorable for life to survive on it, and that it is the living things on Earth that give the planet this ability.

Welcome Home! The discovery of a new planet for mankind.

We start this second part explaining the techniques being used to detect exoplanets.

The techniques that we talk about in detail are:

• Star wobble
• Transit
• Starshade
• Coronagraph
• Gravitational lensing

During the show we also talk about other ideas and projects like the Star Occulter, that would use a giant 45m (148ft) daisy-shaped, plastic shield in tandem with a powerful telescope, trailing 15,000km (9,300 miles) behind.

Welcome Home (A new Earth) - DRH003

We start a new trip Down the Rabbit Hole this time with a topic related to finding a New Earth.

In this first part we talked about some famous planets in sci-fi or fantasy like Trantor, Pandora, or the many related to the Star Wars universe. We go through their characteristics, ecosystems and planets like Trantor of Coruscant which are a full city planets, no vegetation. A full Urban planet.

In this trip we also explore how we would like an exoplanet to be or what conditions, life it would be interesting to have.

So we ask you you the same question: Tell us what is your ideal exoplanet, what weather, ecosystems would you like it to have?
