You were waiting for it! The second part of the Artificial Life topic.
We
received some emails where we were asked to delay a bit the second
episode so that some listeners could research a bit more about the
topic.
Of course your opinions are very
important to us and our main objective is to make people gte interested
in science and find out more by themselves therefore we delayed the
topic until now.
But without any more delays, here its.
Just like in the first episode we start setting up the tpic by describing what is artificial life or alife. Then we move to define Synthetic Biology which is an interdisciplinary field of research at the intersection between life sciences and engineering. Several key enabling technologies have been critical to the emergence of the field over the past decade.
We couldn't move on without mentioning the most famous innovator: Craig Venter. American biotechnologist, biochemist, geneticist, and entrepreneur. He is known for being one of the first to sequence the human genome and the first to transfect a cell with a synthetic genome.

Controversy? Are some people playing god? And making money? The new
topic of down the Rabbit Hole is about Artificial Life: Playing God,
making money.
First things first, we need to establish what is
Artificial life, also referred to as “aLife” and as “synthetic life”.
It is a field of study which examines systems related to life.
Exists
3 main kinds of alife, which are named for their approaches, “soft”
from software; “hard” from computing hardware and “wet” from
biochemistry.
We also mention one of the most famous innovators
in the field, Craig Venter, who is an American biotechnologist,
geneticist and entrepreneur. He is known for being one of the first to
sequence the human genome and the first to transfect a cell with a
synthetic genome.
But since this is the first part of the show we
obviously had to talk about conspiracy theories and Sci-fi and that's
how we arrive to the New World Order (NWO). A conspiracy theory mentions
that one of the goals of the NWO is to create a new breed of
superhumans called post-humans and also that this project is tightly
related to aliens. We go through some of those details.

Episode nr. 9 is our Science part of the Topic of the Magic Molecule, DNA.
Karl and Rafael go through some of the basic like what does DNA stands for and what it is. DNA stands for DeoxyriboNucleic Acid, a self-replicating material which is present in nearly all living organisms as the main constituent of chromosomes. It is the carrier of genetic information.
After establishing more concepts we move to talk about Epigenetics, Junk DNA and of course we talk about some of the examples and experiments done about this, like the Twins studies.
DNA also is capable of holding an amazing amount of information, can be considered a data-store. It can hold data for even 1 million years. One gram of DNA can hold 455 Exabytes. which is One Billion Gigabytes!

After a couple of weeks in which we had to travel and go through some interesting experiences, we are back with a new trip Down The Rabbit Hole, in which we will discuss about the Magic Molecule: DNA.
There have been lot of movies and books related to DNA in sci-fi and movies including Jurassic Park where dinosaurs are resurrected, but the big problem has to do in how long DNA retains it's integrity and information, since DNA is the blue print of life, there is a limit in how much DNA can retain the information and it's between a thousand and a hundred thousand years while is not in contact with water, after that the information gets corrupted.
We mention panspermia which means seeding planets with DNA through asteroids and the fact we mention it it's because has been used a a central topic in movies where earth or other planets got life due to asteroids crashing in a planet and seeding the planet creating new life.
The TV series Fringe was mentioned once again since they used Amber to seal the rift and persons that were in the middle of the inter dimensional activities, the Amber appears as well in Jurassic part where the DNA was kept inside a mosquito trapped and from this DNA dinosaurs were replicated.
